JOB SUMMARY
Assist Class A & Class B mechanics in the maintenance and repair of heavy-duty equipment, heavy duty trucks, light trucks, construction equipment and various mechanical attachments. Change and repair tires for heavy-duty trucks. Help to maintain the shop and construction yards in a clean, organized, and safe manner. Mechanic – Class C is open and ready to learn the advanced skills of his trade.
CHARACTERISTIC JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performs preventative maintenance tasks on various equipment, some in assistance to a mechanic.
- Adhere to standard operating procedures (SOPs) and Job Safety Analysis (JSAs).
- Keep a daily record of his activities and assists with the completion of work orders, daily maintenance and repair logs and fleet service logs.
- Maintain and secure work tools.
- Clean and maintain work area.
- Use hand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, pressure gauges, and precision instruments, as well as power tools such as pneumatic wrenches, lathes, welding equipment, jacks, hoists, and other equipment, as necessary.
- Assist with the inspection of brake systems, steering mechanisms, wheel bearings, and other important parts to ensure that they are in proper operating condition.
- Repair, maintain and change tires of all sizes and configuration of vehicles.
- Perform routine maintenance as per SOP which would include but not limited to changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment and machinery.
- Assist with the adjustment and relining brakes, wheel alignments, replacing seals, adjusting, and replacing calipers and reassembling equipment.
- Raise trucks and heavy parts or equipment using hydraulic jacks or hoists.
- Assist with the inspection and testing of defective equipment to diagnose malfunctions.
- Assist with attaching test instruments to equipment and read dials and gauges to diagnose malfunctions.
- Assist in reconditioning and replacing parts, pistons, bearings, gears, and valves.
- Assist in the inspection, repair, and maintenance of automotive and mechanical equipment and machinery such as pumps and compressors.
- Assist with disassembling and overhauling internal combustion engines, pumps, generators, transmissions, clutches, and differential units.
- Assist in the inspection, repair, and maintenance of hydraulic systems.
- Perform periodic cleaning and maintenance on portable construction equipment including scissor lifts and other machines.
- Power wash vehicles and work to maintain construction yard.
- Assist in rebuilding gas and/or diesel engines.
- All other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS
Candidates must have demonstrated mechanical aptitude and at least two years of paid work experience as mechanic or mechanic’s helper. Must be ready, willing, and capable of learning the fundamental knowledge and skills required for diesel and heavy equipment. Must have the ability to read and interpret blueprints and schematics. Manual dexterity required for operating machinery, tools, and computers. Must have a commitment to quality work. Work involves frequent lifting of materials up to and above 40 plus pounds. Machinery and tool operation requires the use of safety equipment to include but not limited to eye safety glasses, hearing protection, work boots, and hardhats. Must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol examination. Must have a high school diploma or equivalency. Class B driver’s license is preferred.
