SUPERINTENDENT

JOB SUMMARY

The superintendent plans and ensures the coordination of in-field construction. Works with Project Managers and General Superintendents to ensure the highest quality workmanship and maintain exceptional safety standards while managing the scope, schedule and budget of a project in the field.  Superintendents direct the work of foremen and their crews maintain responsibility for the control of assigned job sites and for work progress on those jobs. Superintendents may lead one or more construction projects.  Superintendents also provide front-line clients relations and coordinate the work of all subcontractors under the company’s direction.

CHARACTERISTIC JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Coordinates with Project Manager during pre-construction to understand scope, schedule, and budget particularly manpower and equipment requirements.
  • Understands budget and production goals. Works to meet or exceed goals while maintaining safety and quality.
  • Communicates daily with the Project Manager, General Superintendent, lead foreman, and support department managers (Equipment, Transportation, Warehouse, etc.) to coordinate upcoming work, trucking requirements, material supply, equipment necessities and/or shop maintenance as required.
  • Forecasts and pre-plans all upcoming work including but not limited to subcontractors, utility companies, work restrictions, events, etc. and communicates this to the project manager and foreman.
  • Routinely works with foreman/project manager to identify and capture all changes including but not limited to different site conditions, delays beyond our control, quantity over/under runs and other potential job impacts.
  • Ensures all necessary paperwork including but not limited to, timesheets, quantity report sheets, packing slips, trucking tickets, manifests, daily logs, toolbox talks, etc. are properly executed and turned in daily.
  • Performs duties as assigned by company’s health and safety program, ensuring that all health and safety requirements are adhered to on a daily basis.
  • Perform routine inspection of the job site, workers, and subcontractors to ensure performance and safety.
  • Communicate with clients and inspectors regarding work sequencing, quantities and overall expectations.
  • Coordinates subcontractors to ensure scheduling, safety and quality are maintained to the highest standards.
  • Responsible for identifying and noting “as-built”/ red line changes to project drawings, coordinating with survey.
  • Provides Estimating Department input on productions, means, and methods during to support company bidding.
  • Handles disciplinary procedures or recommendation for field personnel according to company policy.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS

Must have expert knowledge in civil and environmental construction, particularly earthwork, underground utilities, and NYS DOT item construction. Must have ability to supervise multiple foreman and crews in a union trades workforce. Must be able to read and understand detailed project specifications and drawings, and then communicate that information clearly and concisely to subordinates. Mental agility to schedule and shift focus in a fast-past, multiple project/team environment. Must have strong knowledge of layout, grades and survey equipment to control grading operations. Must have strong problem solving skills and be able to adapt to changing conditions efficiently and cost effectively. Must be able to implement solutions to daily issues. Needs to be reasonably computer literate with basic technology knowledge including email, smartphones, and tablets. Must be able to effectively communicate and represent the interests of the company with owners, subcontractors, and suppliers in a professional manner. Minimum requirements: 7+ years paid construction supervision experience and OHSA 30-Hour construction training. Additional training or certifications including NYS DEC Erosion and Sediment Control Trained Contractor, HAZWOPR and Asbestos Supervisor may be required.
