GENERAL SUPERINTENDENT (Civil & Utilities)

JOB SUMMARY

A general superintendent plans and ensures the coordination of multiple construction projects and site superintendents. Responsible for coordination of manpower, equipment, special tools with all site superintendents on a day to day basis. Ensures that the highest quality workmanship is maintained and that the budget and tasks of the site superintendents are followed as planned. Responsible for overall field decisions that arise from the site superintendents daily progress. As part of management team, reports overall progress, concerns and needs to senior management.

CHARACTERISTIC JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Coordinates with Project Manager during pre-construction to understand scope, schedule, and budget particularly manpower and equipment requirements.
  • Understands production goals and works to meet and/or exceed goals while maintaining safety and quality.
  • Communicates daily with the site superintendents, lead foreman, and project managers to meet work expectations.
  • Reviews all site superintendent’s upcoming work including but not limited to subcontractors, utility companies, work restrictions, events, etc. and ensures strict schedules are met.
  • Calls out workforce from union halls as required to staff projects.
  • Routinely works with site superintendent/project manager to identify and capture all changes including but not limited to different site conditions, delays beyond our control, quantity over/under runs and other job impacts.
  • Ensures that the site superintendents have all the necessary paperwork including, but not limited to, timesheets, quantity control sheets, packing slips, trucking tickets, manifests, daily logs, toolbox talks, etc. are properly executed and turned in daily.
  • Perform routine inspection of the job site, workers, subcontractors and public to ensure performance and ensure that all health and safety requirements are adhered to on a daily basis throughout the organization.
  • Performs duties as assigned by company’s health and safety program.
  • Communicates with the site superintendents to coordinate upcoming work, equipment necessities and or shop maintenance as required across multiple projects.
  • Communicate with clients and inspectors as necessary.
  • Routinely reviews subcontractors scheduling, safety and quality are maintained to the highest standards.
  • Review all equipment, condition, shop scheduling for repairs, maintenance and overall equipment efficiencies.
  • Handles disciplinary procedures for field personnel according to company policy.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS

Must have expert knowledge in civil and environmental construction particularly earthwork, underground utilities, and NYS DOT item construction. Must have ability to supervise a team of superintendents and to schedule and perform multi-tasking work in a fast-paced environment. Must be able to read and understand detailed project specifications and drawings, and then communicate that information clearly and concisely to subordinates. Must have detailed knowledge of layout, grades and survey equipment to control grading operations. Must have strong problem solving skills and be able to adapt to changing conditions efficiently and cost effectively. Must be able to implement solutions to daily issues. Need to be reasonably computer literate with basic technology knowledge including smartphones. Must be able to effectively communicate and represent the interests of the company with owners, subcontractors, and suppliers in a professional manner. Minimum requirements: 7-10 years construction supervision experience and OHSA 30 hour construction training. Additional training or certifications including HAZWOPR and Asbestos Supervisor may be required.
